I wonder if black people turn white when they reach a certain income level as was explained to me in class, do white people turn black when they lose their wealth. I am just wondering.
DISTRACTIONS

I AGREE WITH THE PROFESSOR. THE HIGHER STATUS CONSTANTLY TRIES TO DISTRACT THE LOWER CLASS WITH ISSUES THAT ARE NOT AS IMPORTANT AS OTHER ISSUES. THEY CONSTANTLY TRY TO STRESS THE PROBLEMS CONCERNING GAY MARRIAGE AND ISSUES LIKE THOSE. HOWEVER, WE HAVE PEOPLE WHO ARE HUNGRY, HOMELESS, AND WITHOUT JOBS.
The Poor

After reading a few articles in our assigned reading, it is clear that most of the working class and middle class in America are unaware of class. Many people seem to believe that they belong to a class that they really don't belong to, but credit cards have made it possible for almost anyone to own a house and a car. The cycle of debt is taking place in our nation because of the desire to keep up with the rich. The media is also highly influential in providing an image of all of "us" being in it together when we are not. The rich also are the ones to most likely to donate to their own causes instead of the poor. I also did not know the exact beak down of welfare in our country, but it is clear that we spend much more money on other things that are not complained about daily in our media.
Class Discussion Regarding Social Stratification

Last class we discussed social stratification and how everyone is ascribed (by birth) a position. I personally agree with this fact...(I don't like it but I do have to agree with it). It is possible to move up in this world but the move is not a great or far one within our social hierarchy. From my personal experience my family was raised in a somewhat ghetto area in New York but by the time I was entering High School my parents decided to move the family out to the suburbs so I could attend a better school. This change made me realize that as one advances in the world many people become jealous and wish for failure. I do believe that due to birth everyone has a set position but I also believe that we can move up the ladder
comment on solar panels at shelby farms

I like the idea of being green. I think that with these different ways, like solar panels, there is always going to be pros and cons to anything. One of the pros that i like is that it is going to be used as an educational device. This way we are teaching children about being green and showing them different possibilities and actual leading by example. one of the cons is that solar panels can get pretty pricey and depending who is paying for them the return on the investment might take a while.Another con i can see is that while saving energy you are having to pay an energy tax, which sucks i guess the government has to take money in some way. Some pros is that solar power can not be regulated like other fuels which doesnt mean you are not paying for them, solar power is unlimited unless the sun dies out, and solar poweris free, not counting the equipment. there are federal incentives for the commercial solar but there is also incentives for individuals who purchase panels. http://www.getsolar.com/commercial_federal-incentives-for-commercial-solar.php As far as if there should be a solar panels at shelby farms i say why not, but it i think it would be better if the community would think that it is worth it.
superior & inferior

Do you guys agree with what we talked about today as far as being pretty much stuck in your class as being superior & inferior? I agree, I think its bad that our ranking of success comes from how much money we have & not by the accomplishments we've made. Our society is based on money! We put people in categories based on how much money they have (or we think they have), then by race, & etc. Do you think that oppurtunities have become a little easier to come by today now that it is a little bit easier to get a better education? Notice I said a little bit easier & I mean the fact that student loans are offered.
RE: Solor Panels at Shelby Farms

We talked about how much we pay in electricity today to MLG&W. What are some views on the solar farm on Walnut Grove? Five-acre solar panels financed at 4.3 million. It is a 1 megawatt solar farm using 4,160 solar panels to generate enough electricity to power 200 homes or 20 businesses. It is the first solar array in Tennessee to have a solar tracking system. Silicon Ranch will sell the power to MLG&W and receive a TVA subsidy paying 12 cents above market rate for each kilowatt hour produced. After 10 years the Agricenter will have the option to purchase the solar array at fair mraket value( ummm fair market value). There will be a webcam for educational purpose in classrooms (oh wow they thought about the children).
