Test Ready?????

I am in the throws of studying or what i think is studying. I am definitely intrigued by the struggles of the people of color and the white ethnics of this country. Every race has had its struggles and the pull factor of the U.S. was very enticing for everyone except the Africans that were brought here by force and the Native Americans who were already here. I am trying to get an understanding of each group, their contributions. and stereotypes. Hopefully, I am getting enough understanding to smile at the test grade or at least smirk. Break over, back to getting "test ready".

"People who don't have money don't understand the stress,"

Two class meetings ago, we were discussing something that reminded me of this article here:

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/bonus-withdrawal-puts-bankers-malaise-050100338.html

Apparently for this top 1% earner, it's just not enough. He got a smaller bonus this year, and makes $350,000 pre-bonus.

"...doesn't cover his family's private-school tuition, a Kent, Connecticut, summer rental and the upgrade they would like from their 1,200-square- foot Brooklyn duplex.

"I feel stuck," Schiff said. "The New York that I wanted to have is still just beyond my reach."'

"People who don't have money don't understand the stress," said Alan Dlugash, a partner at accounting firm Marks Paneth & Shron LLP in New York who specializes in financial planning for the wealthy. "Could you imagine what it's like to say I got three kids in private school, I have to think about pulling them out? How do you do that?"

This isn't The Onion. This is a finance article interviewing real people who claim to be suffering. They like it to the scenario of them having the flu vs the rest of us having a terminal disease in that, 'you still suffer'. Sorry, no sympathy.

Exam 2

I'm really going to study for this exam. I didn't study properly last time and it showed. I hope I do better this time. I really need to pull my grade up. It sounds like there are quite a few people in the boat with me, too. I think the review went very well and feel more comfortable this time around -- second tests usually are better for me! :) good luck everyone! Terri

Exam II

I'm going to study very hard for Exam II. My mother is in ICU and my family and I are hoping for the best. Hopefully I can stay focus enough to study for this exam. Mrs. Warren gave a lot of information in class the last two nights we attended, plus the information out of the book. I hope the exam comes mostly from the information on the handout. Good Luck on Tuesday.

test

I am really learning alot of information is this class and can say that it has been pretty descent. On another note these test. I barely passed the last test and kind of nervous about next week test. I'm going to try my best and study this weekend and absorb all the information I can. I really really need to past this test.

Test 2

After todays review im actually very nervous about this test. Im really trying to find a new way to study because I dont think my brain is retaing this information correctly. I keep getting this mixed up with that and vice versa. Its so many small details and so many details that cross groups I just feel like i am doing more damage than anything else. Ive done flash cards and repitition. Any other studying styles that anyone could suggest would be greatly appreciated. Good luck everyone, I know I am surely goin to need it.

Class This Afternoon

Oh how I hated missing class this afternoon. This is the only class, since school started this semester, that I've missed for this class. It was a tough decision, but today was my son's first baseball game- and yes he did well. I'm sure it was very interesting and you all reviewed thoroughly for the test. I wonder if our Professor passed out our graded papers? Nevertheless, I'll be studying really hard this time, becasue I missed the review. If any one is up to sharing their notes and/studying as a group, just let me know. Have a good night everyone.

Test

Hello I hope somebody see this and respond before our night class lol but is our test suppose to be tonight or is it next tuesday?

Trying To Prepare

During my reading, I have found a great deal of monotany in the material. Trying to separate what is different with each minority group has been quite a challenge for me. Making flash cards is something that I haven't thought of & I think this is something I am going to try. Hopefully I can make myself at ease about this test because a tense me is not good, at all.

On another note, I still would like to get the recipe for that dip from the class presentations. If you will inbox me, it would greatly appreciated or bring the info to the class tonight. mabrown346@gmail.com or mabrown3@memphis.edu

class notes

Preparation for the next exam has started for me and I have began to make flash cards and make an attempt to study. I was in class Tuesday but I had to leave early and wanted to know if anyone had notes I could make a copy of write down and also is the study guide the only thing we need for this test and will most of the information come from the book this time? I really hope I do better than what I did on the last exam so I am preparing early to make sure that happens

test info

I am really worried about this next exam. It kooks as if alot of the info is really the same or, at least very similar. There is a ton of reading. As I read, the charters read nearly the same. It is really scary, to me, to think how there will be 50 different facts about these ethnic groups from all of this similar but different fact reading. I'm not really looking forward to this but I am ready to get this exam behind me.

Class This Week

I am looking forward to class this week. I am a part of the Native American group, and finally we will present our oral presentation. I hope I can do as well as everyone else has done thus far. Mrs. Warren is truly unique. I'll see you all in class tomorrow.

Last Class

I must say that I enjoyed our last class meeting. I must also give everyone two thumbs up on their presentation, they were all great and very informative. It was interesting to see that no matter what your race is, we must all go through something in order to make it in this crazy world.

presentations

Everyone did a great job presenting, aside from the hot box we were all sitting in! Thanks for all the delicious food people brought, I say yall should post your recipes! Good information and good ending to the night!

Last Nights Presentations

Congrats to everyone who presented last night. There was plenty of interesting information. We have one more group next week and then on to material for the second exam of the class. From what I understand, a lot of this material will come straight from the book. I have to set aside more time to read for this exam.... See you next week.

Last Night

Great job! Everyone did an impressive job on their presentations. We (ethnic groups) all have a unique story to tell and in the end we share similar difficulties and triumphs. The presentations really drove that point home.

Thank you to those that brought in the yummy snacks - especially that cheese dip and shredded beef (please share the recipes)!

I am looking forward to hearing the Native American group next week although I hope the A/C is fixed and those terroristic wasps are banished. lol

Presentations

In general everone who presented did a great job. Even though they were kind of long it was still informative to learn about the different groups. What was particually interesting from what I interpreted from each group was that every ethnic group really went through the same obstacles almost.

Will not be attending class tonight.

After looking forward to tonight's important assignment, I unfortunately will not be attending class. My co-worker at St Jude had an emergency at the last minute and will not be coming in until 6:00pm. Since I'm on-call I will have to stay until they arrive. Hopefully it will not be longer than that time since I have been here since 7:00am. I remembered Mrs. Warren's policy about coming in late, and in order to not disturb anyone during their presentation, I will not attend class. I wish everyone good luck tonight on their presentation.

Ms. Warren's announcements

For those that didn't see it under Ms. Warren's announcement section, I've copied and pasted her announcement from 2/28/12 -- see below:

February 28, 2012

VERY IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO FOLLOW:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE PRESENTATION DATE HAS BEEN CHANGED TO MARCH 13. We will complete all groups on March 13th. You need one page of notes on your question - make sure you choose what you think are the most important facts. You will need the same five references, either on the back of your fact sheet or attach another page. You no longer need the 3 page paper. Spend this extra time to read your text and study. I will have two full nights to lecture for the next test so make sure you show up for class.

If you did not come to class today, Feb 28th, please contact your group to see what you need to do as far as presentation is concerned. The project is still worth the same points.

Confused

Hi everyone, I thought that the presentation is on March 20. As soon as I checked Nfomedia I saw that everyone is excited about the presentation today. So are we having the presentation today?
Posted by      jina g. at 3:19 PM CDT
  Terri Davis  says:
Yeah -- right before our break, she announced that we would do it differently (not the 3-page) paper and would knock them all out today, which would leave two full nights for lecturing before our next test. Before she let us go two weeks ago, she let us meet with our groups. She also made a blog post. Hope this helps.

I went to the assignment section on this site and copied them for you. Here they are:

1., Joe R. and Clairece Booher Feagin. 2008. Racial and Ethnic Relations: A Custom Edition for the University of Memphis. Boston: Pearson Custom Publishing.

2. Roberts, John. 2010. ?Italian Americans.? Gale Encyclopedia of American Ethnic Groups. New York: McGraw Hill Publishing.

3. Young, Francis. 1980. ?Italians in America.? Journal of Social Problems, Vol 23. University of Tennessee Press.

APA or MLA

Quick question -- did she say APA or MLA style? I went back to the syllabus and danged if I can find it now. LOL I know she said to do it just like she had the three of hers, but I'd like to be sure I've got it right. :)

Internet source

I think the one site she mentioned in class was www.jstor.com. Hope this helps. Also, try going to the library section on the memphis.edu site. I found it to be very helpful to me. :) Good luck. Terri

Class lecture

I am really glad that Ms. Warren decided to change the make-up of the assignment. I had started on it but I also have another class that is simply taking everything out of me. This is only my 2nd semester back since 1993 and I have yet to get completely back into the full swing of things. I also work nights and am having a hard time adjusting my sleep schedule. I'm going to be fine - I HAVE TO BE!! - but not having to put all of that information to paper will definitely make things easier. I hope that everyone has a fun and safe break and can come back a bit rejuevenated. My kids are home from college and I'll have to see how successful my break is afterwards. See you in class...PRESENTING MY ASSIGNMENT.
Posted by      Mark B. at 3:53 PM CST
  Terri Davis  says:
Mark -- I'm with you on that one. I started back in 2008 after 24 years -- it definitely took some work on getting the schedule worked out. I work full-time during the day, three classes (two on campus and one on-line), live with my aging mother, and babysit for my 14-month old grand-daughter about once a week. hahaha! I don't know if I could handle working nights though -- that has to be tough......It's a good thing women can wear makeup, because I sure rely on my coverup to mask the dark circles under my eyes! LOL See you Tuesday!

Class

Well, I've been reading and studying while on break. I hope to do better on this next test than I did on the last one. I do want to say that I really hate that Ms. Warren is just going to be lecturing from now on and not interjecting a little humor along with the lecture. I, personally, enjoyed it and found that it made the night pass much faster than just listening to a lecture. I don't know how many times I have arrived early and listened to the professor that is there before our class. He is strictly ALL lecture with no input from the students. It is almost like listening to the teacher on Charlie Brown -- blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. I sincerely hope that is not what is going to happen for the latter half of our semester. The girls around me might just have to wake me up if that is the case. :) Enjoy the rest of your break!
