This course provides a general introduction to the peoples of Africa, focusing on cultural, historical, economic, sociopolitical, environmental, and health issues from an anthropological perspective. Other topics, including geography, archaeology, languages and literature, art, music, popular culture, gender studies, and the African Diaspora will be explored as well. In doing so, the course introduces students to a wide range of topics and issues stressing the diversity and complexity of African cultures and societies through space and time. We examine rural and urban African communities, assess misconceptions and stereotypes concerning Africa and African peoples, and explore the roles played by African societies and peoples in the past and the modern world. |
