Syllabus

Required Texts

White Noise (preferably Penguin Great Books of the 20th Century edition) by Don DeLillo

Signs of Life: Fifth Edition or Sixth Edition edited by Sonia Maasik and Jack Solomon

Electronic Reader

NOTE: The electronic readings are required. I would recommend printing them out and bringing them to class. I am providing them this way to save you money on a course reader.

Attendance

Quizzes will be given in class often. In addition, much of the intellectual yield from this class is a direct result of attending class, listening to lectures, and participating in discussion. Regular attendance is critical to your success. If you miss a class it is your responsibility to find out what you missed. Please exchange information with a peer in class to facilitate this.

Tardiness

When students are habitually late to class, they disrupt the ongoing lesson. This is disrespectful to me and to the other students.

Website

The course will make extensive use of a course website located at http://www.nfomedia.com/english1csec47. You will be expected to post blog entries, comments, a reading journal, and various other contributions on the website regularly, and important instructions for completing assignments in this class will appear there. It is your responsibility to check the website daily.

Late Work

All essay assignments are due at the beginning of class on the date specified. The grade on late essay projects will be reduced by one letter grade for each class day late. Quizzes, website assignments, and anything done during the class period cannot be made up.

Electronic Copies

You are required to submit an electronic copy of all essays to Blackboard (in the assignments section) so that they may be checked by plagiarism software. You will not receive a grade for your paper unless it has been submitted electronically. Electronic submissions are due before the beginning of class on the day the essay is assigned. Blackboard is located at http://ilearn.ucr.edu.

Electronic Devices

Please turn all cell phones off before class. Do not text in class.

Classroom Conduct

This is a workshop style class requiring a lot of discussion and interaction with your peers. In order to facilitate a productive environment where everyone feels welcome and free to express thoughts, challenge ideas, and learn, I ask each student to conduct themselves as conscientious and respectful individuals. Please use appropriate language, allow others the opportunities to speak, and be mindful of sensitive political issues. Stay engaged, but be open-minded!

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is the presentation of another's work as your own, whether you mean to or not. Copying or paraphrasing passages from another writer's work without acknowledging that you have done so is plagiarism. Allowing another writer to write any part of your essay is plagiarism. Plagiarism is a serious crime and will not be tolerated. If you plagiarize, you risk failing this course as well as dismissal from the university. Plagiarism is easy to avoid. Simply acknowledge the source of any words, phrases, or ideas that you use. If you are not sure how to quote or paraphrase a source, or if you need help with the format of parenthetical citations or works cited documentation, check with me. While you can (and should) seek the help and advice of friends, classmates, and tutors, be sure that your written work is completely your own.
