ISI Inspection Results Report, Trips and Holidays, Clocks

Dear Students,
The ISI Inspection report is now available for download on our website. The outcome is excellent and we would like to thank all teachers, students and and staff for helping to make Leeds Language College a great place to work and study in. Here is a link to the report:

http://www.leedslanguagecollege.com/images/stories/DOCUMENTS/PFE_Report_-_Leeds_Language_College_final_for_publication_received_on_23_MARCH_2012.pdf

You can also access it directly on our website in the 'About Us' section.

We would also like to inform all students that there will be a whole school trip to Tropical World and Roundhay Park on Thursday 5th April 2012. Groups should make arrangements with their teachers but should all arrive at the college to sign attendance lists first. Students who do not want to come should either take a day's holiday or come to the college for a substitute lesson with a cover teacher which may involve working through worksheets left by your regular teacher. Please note that the purpose of the trip is educational as well as for leisure. It will give students an opportunity to broaden their vocabulary and engage in English conversation with their teachers and other students in an informal atmosphere. All students are therefore encouraged to attend, as the trip is part of the course syllabus. Entrance fees to Tropical World are £3.30 for adults. Access to Roundhay Park is free of charge. Students are also encouraged to bring sports equipment such as badminton racquets, footballs etc. and a picnic, weather permitting.

The college is organising a Karaoke Evening on Monday 16th April at 7.00pm. Please put your name on the list at Reception if you want to come to this social activity.

Please note that Friday 6th April and Monday 9th April are bank holidays - the school will be closed on these days.

The clocks go forward one hour this coming Sunday. Please put your clock one hour forward on Sunday night. The following article explains why we move the clocks forward:

INTERNATIONAL DAY AND VALENTINE'S DAY

Dear Students,
On of our students, Elmira Gerayeli (EAP IELTS HIGHER 12.20pm) came up with a very good idea recently.
Elmira said it would be great to find out more about other students' cultures and traditions and suggested organising a special day for each nationality. Students could then prepare presentations about their culture, prepare traditional dishes, share photographs and play music from their country.

If you would like to organise something like this with your friends for other students at the college to enjoy, please approach Reception with your ideas. It can be on the date of a special national holiday in your country or at any other time. Please let us know if you would like to organise something like this at the college and approach us with your ideas.
We look forward to learning more about different customs and traditions.

We can call it 'INTERNATIONAL DAY' or if you have better suggestions for a name please tell your teachers.

We would also like to invite all students to make a special Valentine's Day video. This can be a video of you/your class/some students reciting a romantic poem or singing a love-song. The best one will win a prize. The video must be submitted by Friday next week. Please also discuss this with your teachers.
Regards,
Leeds Language College

TV Documentary about international couples- Channel 4

Dear Students
We have just received the following email from a TV Producer who is interested in making a documentary about International couples - mainly women who are married to/in relationships with British men. If you are interested please contact him/her directly.

Please read the message below:

Hi - I've just received this - please feel free to contact him/her if you want to participate:

Hi there,

I just spoke with Laura from English UK who told me to contact you direct about
a documentary project I'm currently working on, to see if you might be able to
put up a poster in your centre and spread the word to your students.

I work at Fresh One Productions, Jamie Oliver's TV company
(www.freshone.tv) and we're working on a documentary
project for Channel 4 about Anglo/non-Anglo relationships (this could include
Anglo-Thai/Chinese/Filipino/Russian couples). The series hopes to offer genuine
insight into modern relationships between young, British men and women from
overseas who have found love and are about to come to/are here in the UK for
first time.

The documentary hopes to offer a fresh and contemporary perspective on a new
generation of these partnerships, challenging old stereotypes and exploring the
cultural diversity that can be achieved in such couples. Our aim is to produce a
series with a warm and informative tone, following the women's experiences of
British culture for the ufirst time and documenting the couples expectations of
one another and how these can be achieved and overcome.

We are looking for people who have recently settled in the UK but also those who
are potentially about to settle in the UK in the next few months. This allows us
to document the women's first encounters of British culture - be that, language,
food, family or work - and through this hold a mirror up to British values, our
expectations and contemporary culture in comparison. Our idea is to produce a
warm documentary that looks at British men, British women and the nuances we
may take for granted in our British culture through the new settlers' eyes.

It would be brilliant to speak to some of your students who may be learning or
improving their English because they've decided to settle in the UK with their
partner. Many of the couples we've spoken to so far are attending language
schools to great success and have made their first UK-based friends there, so I
thought I'd get in touch to see if you're able to put the attached on your
noticeboard and send it out to your students? Our contact details are on the
attached, so if anyone is interested in taking part, they can contact us
directly.

Initially, this would only involve a research conversation and if the couple
were interested in potentially being part of the project, we would subsequently
meet them to discuss the documentary in more detail.

If you have any questions, please feel free to give me a call - my number is 020
3375 5162.

Many thanks for your time!

Mel Bezalel

A few incidents of mugging in Hyde Park, Woodhouse and Headingly

Dear Students
There have been a couple of cases of mugging in the Hyde Park, Headingly and Woodhouse areas recently. These areas are usually safe, however it seems that a group of young men/teenagers are doing it for 'fun', but taking people's mobile phones and handbags. They seem to be targeting people who look like students from the university.

If you live in these areas please avoid walking through dark places, shortcuts or the park alone when it is dark. Keep to areas that have a lot of light. If possible walk with someone or in a group. Do not use your mobile phone/mp3 player while you are walking, as you can attract unwanted attention. Do not carry important documents or a lot of valuables with you.

The Police have been alerted and there are more plain-clothes police officers on the streets in these areas now. However, it is better to be careful and avoid taking unnecessary risks. We hope they are soon caught and things return to normal as soon as possible.

Kind regards,
Veronica Omeni

BOOK CLUB

Dear all students,

On Wednesday the 19th October (next week), a book club will be held for Leeds language College students at Starbucks cafe inside the Light on The Headrow. If you would like to attend the book club please sign up on the poster next to the front door of the college and choose a book that you would like to talk about at the event (it must be a book that you have read).
After the initial meeting we can decide as a group which books we would like to read every month. The library is very close to the college so I encourage you to enroll there as it costs nothing to borrow books (a small registration fee will be necessary on your first visit).

I hope to see many of you there! We will meet at college at 6.50 on the day. Please be prompt so we can make the most of the time we have at Starbucks!
