Things to Know about Embryo Transfers



What is an embryo transfer?


If you are undergoing the process of IVF (In-Vito-fertilization) you may have heard of embryo transfer and it is the last part of the treatment. The process is relatively simple and you don’t have to worry about it. The patient is given fertility drug so that egg production is stimulated by the ovaries. Once the eggs are matured enough they will be removed from the ovaries and kept in the lab for fertilization. After that, the embryo is transferred back to the woman's reproductive tract. The pregnancy will be successful if the embryo gets attached to the lining of the uterus.

Who are suitable for the medical procedure?


The need for IVF and embryo is needed in a different situation. The treatment is suitable for patients between the age of 18 and 50. For pregnancy to be successful it is important that women fertility should be good as well as the egg reserve. But this is not possible in every case and this where the treatment is required.


In case, is the women is suffering from the problem of endometriosis, ovulation disorder, overweight, multiple miscarriages, blocked or damaged the fallopian tube, premature ovarian failure, uterine fibroids, and genetic disorder will increase the chances of infertility treatment. 

What is the process of embryo transfer?


Before starting the procedure, the doctor will confirm your name and date of birth (DOB) to match the information of the embryo. The entire process takes under a very safe and clean environment. The whole process of embryo transfer takes 15 minutes. Moreover, the patient is not given anesthesia during the treatment. In some clinics, the patients are given muscle relaxing or Valium prior to the procedure. This will calm the nerves, the main purpose is to relax the muscle of the uterus and so that embryo transfer gets a better place for the implant.
The embryo is kept is a special contain called catheter. To allow visualization of the cervix a speculum is placed inside the vagina and once everything is done it will be cleaned properly. With the ultrasound, through the cervix, the catheter is placed into the uterus. Once the catheter is placed in the right position, the embryo will be inserted into the uterus where the implantation will occur hopefully. Before starting the process, the doctor will talk about the total number as well as the quality of embryo to be transferred. Both doctor and patient decide on this factor according to their wish that how many embryo ones they want to transfer.

Does the process hurt?


Although the process is not at all painful, you might experience slight discomfort during the insertion of a speculum or placing the catheter.

How to take care after the treatment?


After the procedure, the legs will be kept slightly elevated for a short period of time. After the transfer, the patient should rest for around 15 to 30 minutes. The patient is advised to any type of vaginal cream or lubricants. You should take shower (don’t swim or take tub baths), avoid vigorous exercise, drink plenty of water, and avoid sexual activity for one week.
