African Archaeology Anthropology 101 University of California - Santa Barbara Instructor: Dr. Matthew C. Curtis (Matt) Email: mcurtis@anth.ucsb.edu Course Description This course explores central issues in African archaeology from the Plio-Pleistocene to the beginning of the modern era with particular foci on technology and subsistence during the Pleistocene and early Holocene, the origins of food production, the development of complex societies, and regional and inter-regional culture contact and trade. We will consider both the archaeology of Sub-Saharan Africa and North Africa, as well as touch upon aspects of the archaeology of the greater African Diaspora (both the Atlantic and Indian Ocean diasporas).
