Jack Westfall M.D., M.P.H.
Jack is the Associate Dean of Rural Health for the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine, where he works to build bridges between rural communities around Colorado and the University of Colorado Denver. He started and directs the High Plains Research Network (HPRN) in 1997, an integrated practice-based research network of rural and frontier hospitals, ambulatory clinics, and clinicians dedicated to improving medical care in rural Colorado. The HPRN has conducted research on a host of topics including cardiac care, palliative care, medical mistakes, colon cancer prevention, asthma, and the impact of underinsurance on access to care. Jack serves as Director for the Colorado Area Health Education Center (AHEC), which focuses on increasing the pipeline of young people from rural Colorado interested in health careers.

Susan Gale
Susan Gale is a Community Liaison with the High Plains Research Network. Susan has worked at the University of Colorado Denver doing research at the dental school and the Diabetes Registry focusing on compiling and analyzing data. She took graduate courses in biostatistics and epidemiology. This background gave her a deep appreciation for research and the need to do it in various settings. She has lived in rural Colorado for the past 20 years. Her research interests included projects on asthma, childhood obesity, smoking cessation, fetal alcohol exposure and traumatic brain injury.

The Colorado Area Health Education Centers Program works to build state-wide network capacity and strengthen academic-community linkages in four core mission areas. The four core mission areas of the AHEC are: Health Careers and Workforce Diversity, Health Professions Student Education, Health Professions Continuing Education and Public Health and Community Education. Specifically, the goals and aims of the proposed three-year program are to:

Increase the potential for minority/disadvantaged students in elementary and secondary schools from rural and medically underserved areas to pursue career pathways in the health professions;Increase the potential for health professions students enrolled in degree programs in medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy and allied health to practice in rural and urban medically underserved areas in Colorado AHEC Program regions upon graduation;Increase access to evidenced-based health information and accredited, high-quality continuing education programs for health professionals serving in rural and urban medically underserved areas; and,Increase access to health education for community residents in rural and urban medically underserved areas in Colorado AHEC regions.

CBIHE is working with Mobile Assay LLC. to foster community outreach related to concussion and TBI awareness and education using a mobile interface.
